Birmingham Airport Guide

Located at 8 miles away from the city centre is Birmingham’s busiest international airport. Birmingham International airport is the country’s seventh busiest airport and handles about 9 million passengers per year. The airport has 1 terminal and one runway. It acts as the major base for Monarch, Flybe, Ryanair and Thomson airways. The airport was first opened in the year 1939. In 2003, the airport was voted the "Best Business airport". Two major reasons that led to the growth of the airport are the expansion of the runway in the year 1966 and opening of the National Exhibition center near the airport in the year 1970. Though the airport initially had 2 terminals, in 2011 they were combined as one single terminal with state of art facilities.

To travel between the airport and city, passengers can choose Trains, Buses, Coaches or Taxis. Birmingham International railway station is connected to the airport through the AirRail Link and the journey time between the airport and city is about 10 – 15 minutes. Bus stops are located outside the terminal building and most buses and long distance coach services that operate from here. Taxis can be availed outside the arrivals hall of the terminal.

The terminal at the airport is well equipped with all basic facilities. Travellers with disability will find the airport to be very friendly with easy access to all floors, wheel chair access in all areas, restroom facilities and a special assistance desk. For travellers with small infants, baby rooms and amusement options such as video games and play lounges are available. If you are a business traveller you can unwind at one of the executive lounges with lip smacking delicacies and a choice of wine before you embark on your long journey. The terminal building has free access to wireless internet throughout and special apps that guide you through the airport.

For your travel shopping needs, your last minute souvenir shopping or for a window shopping to while away your time, Birmingham International airport has a wide choice to offer. From fashion accessories to travel adapters you can find almost everything at the terminal. Some of the famous brands at the airport are Boots, Best of the Best, Claire’s, Game Grid and Holland and Barrett. While so many options can leave you a little exhausted, the refreshment stalls in the airport help you to relax with your family. The airport has simple sandwich bars as well as fine dining options.
